First Transit Employee Recognized for Work in Industry
Sandy Modell highlighted in Metro Magazine as an influential women in transportation.
CINCINNATI—Metro Magazine recently highlighted eight women for their achievements and impact within the male-dominated field of transportation. Sandy Modell, a First Transit employee was highlighted for her work as the general manager of Alexandria DASH, the public transit system in Alexandria, Va. Modell began her career as a transit bus driver in Harrisonburg, Va., while attending college at James Madison University. Initially, Modell was planning a career in teaching but fell in love with transportation she says.
Modell was recognized by the magazine for her work and many achievements at DASH. Since her time with the organization, she has increased ridership, improved the level of service for her customers and made DASH a highly recognizable service within the Washington Metropolitan Area. Currently, Modell manages the operations of 63 buses and 140 employees, which transport more than 4 million passengers annually
“It is an honor to be recognized with seven other great women who have worked hard to achieve success within the transportation industry,” Modell said. “I enjoy what I do everyday. Providing safe and efficient customer service to the community is my primary focus and I look forward to continuing my work with the City to provide beneficial transportation services.”
According to Bill Williamson, region vice president for First Transit, Modell is a proven leader and exceptional transit professional who has served her community well.
“Sandy is a great employee with the vision to propel her organization and First Transit in new directions,” Williamson said. “Her work ethic, dedication to customers and employees is what separates her from others in the industry. She is a very intricate part of our organization and we our proud to have her on our team.”
Modell graduated from James Madison University where she obtained a bachelor’s of science in sociology with a minor in public administration. She is also working on her master’s from George Washington University. Modell is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., and currently resides in Alexandria, Va. She has been with First Transit for 21 years. Modell is also a member of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the Virginia Transit Association (VTA) and is vice-chair of the Virginia Transit Liability Pool (VTLP).
