CINCINNATI, OH – First Transit, Inc. has been awarded a five year renewal contract by the Duluth Transit Authority Board of Directors to provide contract management services to the Duluth Transit Authority. The contract began November 1st, 2006.

The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) has been a contract management client of First Transit since 1970, making it the longest served public transit system of First Transit. During these 36 years, the management contract with DTA has been renewed ten times after public bids.

The DTA was one of the first public transit systems in the nation to incorporate childcare facilities into the design of new transit facilities and continues this tradition with the inclusion of a child-care center at the new UMD Campus Transit Hub.

The DTA acquired a new ITS system in 2001, which includes AVL, computerized scheduling and dispatching for regular route and para-transit; real time, on street information signs; and automatic passenger counters and ADA announcements.

The DTA received the APTA Outstanding Achievement Award in 1990, the Silver Safety Award in 1992, and was a Gold Award Finalist in 2002.

There have been 65 citizens of Duluth who have served as Board Members for the DTA. Management has employed four general managers including Dennis Jensen, who has served as the DTA General Manager since 1979. Jensen continues to manage a fleet of 81 vehicles and 154 employees. He is supported by senior managers Frank Tobey, Region Vice President and Rick Dunning, Senior Vice President.
