CINCINNATI, OH – After a competitive bidding process, Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) Board recommended First Transit be awarded the renewal contract for fixed route services on August 23, 2007. The contract renewal start date was September 30, 2007. This partnership started in 1991 and will now continue until 2012.
The team at Houston Metro will continue under the direction of General Manager Dave VanFossen. Metro has 223 buses operated and maintained by 472 employees. First Transit operates over 10 million miles and transports nearly 15 million passengers annually. This contract is worth over $33 million annually. Maintenance Manager Mark Rogers, Assistant General Manager Chris Bowling, Operations Manger Randy Milby, and Safety Manager David Johnson complete the successful team in Houston.
This partnership has resulted in improved operations and efficiencies. In the 2003 fiscal year, METRO (including First Transit’s operations) had its safest year on record with less than one accident per 100,000 miles. METRO estimates that contracting with First Transit at one of their own garages saves them over $5 million that they use to provide more services for their customers.
