Transit Safety Technology

Technology

Smart Technology for Efficient Operations

Technology enables First Transit to track and improve our operations.  From fleet scheduling and vehicle routing to bus safety checks, we use the latest transit technology to ensure you receive the most efficient service possible.

Documentation

Our preventive maintenance program drives vehicle safety and is tracked and documented by a comprehensive, computerized system. This ensures that scheduled maintenance is performed and that vehicles run safely and reliably. Our safety policies, procedures, notices and updates are documented in an online safety resource center, reaching employees immediately and allowing them to share tips and resources.

Education Through Technology

Technology helps us train and educate drivers, technicians and other employees. Through web-based programs, we are able to reach a wide audience of employees quickly, with the assurance that all are receiving consistent information.

Advanced Technology in Action

Vehicle safety is enhanced through devices such as DriveCam, a video recorder that automatically captures out-of-the-ordinary events as well as monitors normal, everyday vehicle operation. This technology lets us fully investigate any unusual occurrences and helps us educate drivers and other personnel to prevent any reoccurrences in the future.

Our Technology Expertise

The technology available when working with First Transit includes:

  • Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) – automatically pinpoints the geographic location of each vehicle and transmits information to our team
  • Computer aided dispatch system specifications
  • GPS and DriveCam technology – tracks and records vehicle location, speed and direction of any vehicle at any time
  • On-board Wi-Fi capabilities – internet access lets passengers work or simply stay entertained on board
  • Operational reporting
  • Passenger and driver tracking – radio frequency identification (RFID) technology monitors passenger entry and exit
  • Scheduling software
  • Theft-Mate™ vehicle intrusion alarm system – an infrared security and safety system activates audible and visible alarms in the event of an intruder
  • Transit visualization- Online tracking systems give you real-time views of your routes, so you can ensure better passenger service
  • VMS – our proprietary web-based predictive maintenance system tracks inspections and repairs

Such a wide-ranging use of information and on-bus technology lets us keep passengers safer while controlling costs. We think of it as working smarter.
