CINCINNATI, OH – First Transit, Inc was awarded a renewal contract by the Greater Roanoke Transit Company in Roanoke, VA to continue providing management for their fixed route and paratransit services. The contract began March 1, 2007 and exercised three of the five year options in the initial management contract. The management team includes Dave Morgan, General Manager, Chip Holdren, Assistant General Manager, and support from Region Vice President, Bill Williamson.
Greater Roanoke Transit (Valley Metro), managed by First Transit since 1974, operates as a small urban fixed route transit provider and provides ADA required paratransit transportation service. Valley Metro operates 18 routes with thirty eight 35-foot transit coaches and serves the City of Roanoke, City of Salem, and the Town of Vinton, Virginia. Valley Metro also operates the Smart Way bus service, which connects the Roanoke Valley to the New River Valley and Virginia Tech. In addition, Valley Metro provides free weekend service between downtown and Hollins University, Roanoke College, and Ferrum College. Valley Metro operates 42 fixed route and 12 paratransit vehicles, with an annual ridership of 2.1 million.
