Construction is now underway on a NEW $28 million facility that will offer amenities for passengers and the community at large.
DULUTH, MINNESOTA (July 2, 2014) – The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) recently held the official groundbreaking ceremony for the beginning of construction of the new $28 million Multimodal Transportation Center in downtown Duluth, Minnesota. The new center will provide off-street boarding areas for local transit and intercity bus services, an enclosed passenger waiting area with information and ticketing services, bike storage facilities, a police sub-station and public restrooms.
DTA officials and Executives from the General Contractor, Mortenson Construction, and the Architectural Firm, LHB, were on hand to answer questions and make statements about the project which is scheduled for completion in December of 2015.
DTA General Manager, Dennis Jensen, stated “The Multimodal Transportation Center has been designed as a regional center, with users of local and intercity buses, pedestrians and the biking community in mind. Plus, it adds to the connectivity between the downtown and the waterfront area.” A major component of the project is the reconstruction of the Northwest Passage, a skywalk link that spans Interstate 35 between the downtown area and the Duluth Convention Center. “We think that the new center is a nice fit to city’s development efforts and the attraction of the downtown as a place to work, shop and be entertained.” Jensen continued.
City of Duluth Mayor Don Ness participated in the event and in his remarks, specifically thanked the late Congressman James Oberstar for his role in securing more than $16 million in federal funding for the project.
