First Transit Managed CTTransit Debuts
Environmentally Friendly Buses

Twenty-five articulated and 14 hybrid-electric buses begin regular operations.

CINCINNATI In April, First Transit-managed Connecticut Transit (CTTransit) began operating its first order of 25 NOVA 60-foot articulated diesel buses and 31 New Flyer 35-foot Xcelsior hybrid-electric buses. CTTransit is the first transportation provider in the state to operate the NOVA buses. In addition to the buses environmentally friendly characteristics, such as its reduction in carbon emissions, they are much larger than the previous buses used, allowing them to combat overcrowding due to the recent 3 – 5 percent increase in ridership.

“It is great to have these types of buses in our fleet,” said David Lee, general manager, First Transit/CTTransit. “With the recent rise in ridership, these buses allow us to accommodate more passengers, as well as do our part in reducing our carbon footprint. The new buses are beneficial for both the environment and the community as a whole.”

Currently, CTTransit operates 13 of the articulated buses at their Stamford location and 12 in the Greater New Haven area, with the Hartford area scheduled to receive 10 more articulated buses this summer. In addition, New Haven is currently operating 14 hybrid-electric buses. CTTransit transports more than 25.6 million passengers annually throughout Hartford, New Haven and Stamford.

First Transit has managed the operations of CTTransit since 1979. The company provides complete operations and transit management services as well as comprehensive preventative maintenance and inspection programs to meet transportation and budgetary needs.
