First Transit Employee Recognized by Mass Transit Magazine

Publication Names Brian Andrews to “Top 40 Under 40” List

CINCINNATI Mass Transit Magazine recently recognized Brian Andrews, operations manager of Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) in Durham, N.C., as one of its “Top 40 Under 40” for 2011. The award recognizes 40 individuals under the age of 40 for their transit industry contributions and exemplary work in their profession. Recipients are individuals who have shown a capacity for innovation, demonstrated strong leadership skills and made a commitment to making an impact in the transit industry.

As operations manager, Andrews manages and oversees the day-to-day operations of DATA’s fixed-route service, which consists of 125 bus operators and more than 20 bus routes. He began his career with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) as an apprentice in 2006 and soon made his way into the First Transit family. Most recently, DATA partnered with Duke University to provide free bus service to students and staff between the city and the university. Andrews credits much of his success on his staff and the hard work they put forth daily at his location.

“It truly is an honor to be recognized by the publication,” Andrews said. “I am thankful for all that I have learned from my managers, and I appreciate the hard work and dedication my team has shown day in and day out to provide a safe and reliable transit service to the community. This recognition is just as much for me as it is for them, and I am truly grateful.”

Andrews graduated from the Winston Salem State University where he majored in business management and management information systems. He received his master’s in public administration from North Carolina Central University. Also in 2011, Andrews was inducted into Winston Salem State’s Football Hall of Fame. He has been married to his wife Joleen for five years and is the proud father of a four-month-old daughter named Aniya Grace.
