The City of Wichita Renews Contract with First Transit
CINCINNATI, OH – First Transit, Inc. is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the renewal to continue providing Transit General Management Services for the City of Wichita and Wichita Transit beginning January 1st, 2007. Jay Banasiak will continue his role as the Director of Transit Services and General Manager for Wichita. Banasiak is supported by Frank Tobey, First Transit Region Vice President.
Wichita Transit, managed by First Transit since 1981, operates fixed route; paratransit demand response (in-house and contracted services with disabled service agency providers); Access to Jobs (utilizing a brokerage system of available public agencies and private provider vehicles); trolley services--charter and historical tours; ridershare program, and manage limo and taxi-cab city transportation ordinances. The transit system currently operates 51 buses/trolleys and 23 wheel chair lift vans on 17 fixed routes, 18 demand-response paratransit routes operated by the department, and paratransit contract services with six social service agencies. Wichita Transit is funded through the following: Federal formula, discretionary, Access to Jobs; Kansas DOT; and City local tax.
Wichita Transit has had several recent accomplishments including the following:
ridership increases of 7.5 % and 9.6% the last two years; “Top Ten Most Improved” transit systems in North America by Metro magazine; “Transit System of the Year” by Kansas Public Transit Association (KPTA); Achievement award by the FTA for “Zero Deficiencies in the Triennial Review”; state-of-the-art operations and garage facility; and replaced 97 % of revenue vehicle fleet since 2002.
